Sharing its borders with Brazil to the north  and Argentina to the west, Uruguay is a small  country  with  a  population  of  just  3.3  million.  Most of its gem mining activities take part in  Artigas, which is the most northern region of the  country.

There are currently around 25 to 35 small scale  mines  in  operation  and  most  search  for  two  members  of  the  Quartz  family: Amethyst  and  Agate.

The Amethyst is of a very high quality with a  deep  violet  colour,  and  although  very  little  is  found in terms of carat weight, it is generally  more highly prized than those of neighbouring  Brazil and Bolivia.
