Many people confuse colour saturation with colour tone. When saturation is discussed in relationship to gemstones, it relates to the purity or intensity of the hue, whereas tone relates to the shade of the colour.
The GIA saturation scale ranges from 1 to 6:
The highest grade, 6, is used for hues that are pure and are described as vividly saturated. From grade four onwards, there should be no grey/ brown in the hue.
