Colour Saturation

Many people confuse colour saturation with  colour  tone.  When  saturation  is  discussed  in  relationship to gemstones, it relates to the purity  or intensity of the hue, whereas tone relates to  the shade of the colour.

The GIA saturation scale ranges from 1 to 6:

The highest grade, 6, is used for hues that are  pure and are described as vividly saturated. From  grade  four  onwards,  there  should  be  no  grey/ brown in the hue.
