An optical  phenomenon  exhibited  in  certain  gemstones caused by alternating layers of different  materials  within  the  gem.  As  light  hits  these  different elements with their different refractive  indexes, it creates a beautiful optical effect. Sheen  is best seen in gems such as Moonstone.

Sheen  is  different  to  lustre  and  brilliance. former is the return of light from the surface of the gem, while the latter is the return of light from  within the gem.
